Good mental health means more than absence of mental afflictions. It is about an experience of mastering life’s tasks and challenges, both at home and at work.
Most of the work in the health, social and care sectors is within what we call relational professions, which involve high demands to mastering one’s own feelings in dealing with others. Those working in the fields of health and emergency services deal with people in acute crisis, grief and illnesses. The work is often fast-paced and requires switching between day and night work.
Research (STAMI 2018) shows that the risk of burnout increases when emotions within are not successfully dealt with. When painful feelings are not processed, “putting on a mask” may be an attempted solution in order to meet external demands. This can lead to burnout, and the risk increases when working different shifts and in an environment with many interruptions. The study shows a connection between high emotional demands at work and mental fatigue after work, where healthcare professions are high on this list.
“Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” (World Health Organization, ICD-11, May 2019).
Self-care – a low priority area?
In health and emergency services, stress factors are part of the profession and are not solvable by outside measures. Stress and painful feelings must be processed where they arise, which is within us.
ConsciousnessTraining is a new and efficient method for stress management and self-care.
After 24 years of developing and testing concrete techniques and training for dealing with stress and pressure, ConsciousnessTraining was developed.
The scientifically published results show that ConsciousnessTraining increase the ability to self-regulate and increases belief in one’s own mastering abilities. Something which is proven to be preventative regarding stress and burnout.
Training of the brain gives inner calmness and improved social understanding after the course.
Working in the fields of mental health and substance abuse is rewarding, and at the same time extremely demanding for the individual employee. Assisting and helping people that are in critical phases of their lives, often makes demands of caretakers that go beyond what they have learned and been trained to do.
Unique Mind ESP offers an expanded program for the fields of health care and substance abuse, since this is one of our major priorities. Through several projects and professional cooperation, we have gathered broad experience regarding the challenges and tasks employees and management face daily, that need to be solved.
Although there are already good ways to do debriefing at workplaces, we see that this is not enough. In order to deal with one’s own experiences and challenges, we recognize the importance of learning simple techniques that each person may use on their own. Our brain, our mind, our thoughts and feelings make no distinction between being at work or at home.
With all the tasks that need to be done, and deadlines “hanging over” us, stress is an important factor to consider. We know that stress leads to many different symptoms in the body, and over time it can lead to exhaustion.
When we start by considering the brain, it is because the brain has neural pathways with memories, and a feeling is linked to each memory. A feeling becomes the thoughts we think, our words and actions, and then form the basis for our decisions. Much of this happens at a subconscious level, or in other words, we run on autopilot.
We don’t even consider whether we are stressed, but we just keep on going. Stress affects our ability to work effectively and how we work with others, in addition to how we feel about our self and those around us.
For those who work in the fields of mental health and substance abuse, a customized, complete course has been created that runs over two days. We have in addition created effective and powerful seminars conducted in three separate modules that are built upon ConsciousnessTraining.
In our project in the municipality of Trondheim, a customized course has been developed for women exposed to violence in close relationships. This produced good results.
We will continue to develop various courses customized for example for anger-management, sleep issues and anxiety/depression.
A book project is also in progress, where we work on developing the techniques from ConsciousnessTraining for use in treatment.

People in healthcare fields are taught to observe others and their needs. There is often a high tempo in health-related workplaces. The work can be both physically and mentally demanding. Health personnel must treat patients professionally and in a humane way, even when there may not always be enough time available. This often results in stress that must be dealt with.
Many bring their work home, and the boundaries between work and leisure time may be unclear. Thoughts from their shift at work may affect sleep. Working shifts can also create challenges regarding sleep. Today we know that quality sleep is important for good mental health.
To do a good job, more is needed than enthusiasm and staying professionally updated. Taking care of oneself in an effective way is also necessary to avoid a buildup of unconscious stress.
We have open courses for private individuals, and we have had many participants who work in healthcare fields. Many have asked about courses where healthcare professionals are brought together. We therefore would like to expand to offer something especially for healthcare personnel.
ConsciousnessTraining includes simple self-help techniques to help handle whatever we may encounter.
One of the techniques may be used for situations that need to be processed. It is a cognitive technique where debriefing may be done effectively by oneself. A “pep talk″ done this way creates good, lasting results. It also improves relationship competence, something that also benefits patients.
The course also includes a technique to improve sleep quality. An element of writing therapy is included, where we sort through and clear our mind of disturbing thoughts and feelings. In addition, it is a planning tool used for preparation, finding good solutions and handle various situations.
With many duties and tasks to do, and time pressure “hanging over″ us, it is important to consider stress factors. We know that stress leads to many different physical symptoms and eventually to exhaustion.
A complete 2-day course has been adapted for health personnel. In addition, effective and powerful seminars have been developed. They are based on ConsciousnessTraining and divided into three modules.

Emergency service personnel, whether emergency agencies, firefighters, police, ambulance or rescue personnel, often have motivation that goes above and beyond doing an important job for society. Making a difference for others, making society safer and just helping are values held in high regard.
Society in constant change makes adaptation and new demands a part of life at work that must be dealt with. In addition, working shifts with adjustments to working hours as well as challenging assignments all matter when stress factors are being analyzed.
We know that long-term stress that is not handled correctly, leads to illness, loss of motivation and exhaustion.
We have open courses for private individuals, and we have had many participants from emergency services. Many have asked for a course where emergency responders are brought together. We therefore would like to expand to offer something especially for emergency responders.
Self-care is a key word when it comes to occupations that demands both physical and mental strength. ConsciousnessTraining includes simple self-help techniques to help handle whatever one may encounter.
One of the techniques may be used for situations that need to be processed. It is a cognitive technique that is used for both defusing and debriefing, because one is able to take a step aside and observe without emotions. An incident or efforts made are processed rationally and emotionally. A “pep talk″ with oneself done this way creates good, lasting results. It also improves relationship competence.
The course also includes a technique to improve sleep quality. An element of writing therapy is included, where we can sort through and clear our mind of disturbing thoughts and feelings. In addition, it is a planning tool used for preparation, finding good solutions and handle various situations.
ConsciousnessTraining has been shown to be an effective method for dealing with stress. The training helps us to maintain a high level of performance, for an extended length of time, without becoming exhausted.
