In order to understand mental training, we must also understand the word mental.
Many people may be afraid of the word mental, because some associate it with “psychiatric or psychological things” we don’t want to relate to.
Our mental abilities are exactly what can give us a good life, and promote our mental health so that we don’t hit the wall at some point in our lives.
The mental part of ourselves includes our thought processes and how we use our thoughts either for positive and constructive thinking, or for negative and destructive thinking where we let our emotions and imagination take control.
Mental training = mental health
We accept mental training when it comes to athletes, because everyone agrees that there are some “barriers in the mind”. In major championships, there is extra loud shouting when they don’t perform as we as compatriots want them to perform.
Nonetheless, we don’t thing of the athlete as having any mental disorder, only that they need to “clear ” their minds. That’s how it is for everyone, regardless of who we are and what we are doing. We need to “clear” our mind.
This is our mental health.
What is mental training?
Many people accumulate and accumulate and haven’t learned anything about how to deal with unwanted feelings. We tend to “sweep them under the rug” or “lock them in the closet” where they are allowed to grow bigger and bigger. We can look at it as a troll in the closet, where the troll only exists in our imagination.
Mental training shines a light on the imaginary troll, so that it can burst (as in fairy tails). To prevent the imaginary troll from being created again, we must understand why it became a troll, so that change can happen. Just as the athlete has done, when he/she gets past the “barrier” and wins.
We need to take action
I think it’s sad to look at the increasing number of members of associations for mental health. The subject of mental health is a major challenge in our society and we must address it seriously. It doesn’t help anyone if it’s only discussed, without us also taking action.
“Myths” have been built up that we must break down and change. In order to make changes and take action, we need to learn a new understanding about our mental health a new understanding about our mental health, and be willing to relate to it in a different way than we have done until now.
Mental training and mental health for everyone
I have removed many such trolls from the closet, and by doing that I can be well prepared for life’s many situations. Of course, I am the one who must be willing to see and do something to change.
The techniques exist, and we also have training for balance between reason and imagination. For me, it’s about making this known, and giving others the same opportunity – athlete or not;)
